Lake Waconia Regional Park is the public face of Lake Waconia — 245 acres on the south shore managed by Carver County. The park is a free-to-enter, year-round destination with a swimming beach, boat ramp, picnic shelters, hiking and biking trails, and groomed cross-country ski trails in winter. For most visitors, this is where you actually meet the lake.
The Beach
The Lake Waconia Regional Park beach is the headline feature for families. The entry is sandy and gradual, the swimming area is roped off, and lifeguards are on duty during posted summer hours (typically Memorial Day through Labor Day, with reduced staffing in shoulder months). The grass area above the beach has picnic tables, restrooms, and a playground. There is no admission fee, though parking can fill on hot summer Saturdays — arrive before 11am or after 4pm for the easiest spot.
Boat Ramp
The park's boat ramp is the largest of three on the lake. It's free (state-managed) and open during the open-water season. Trailer parking is generous. The ramp is plowed and maintained for ice fishing access throughout the winter as well. Note: Lake Waconia is an Aquatic Invasive Species checkpoint — clean, drain, and dry your boat before launching.
Trails
The park has approximately five miles of multi-use trails winding through prairie, oak savanna, and lakeshore. The trails are mostly flat — friendly for kids, casual cyclists, and trail runners. In winter the trails are groomed for cross-country skiing (classic and skate). The park connects to the broader Carver County trail system for longer rides.
Picnic Shelters & Group Use
Three picnic shelters are available to reserve through Carver County Parks. Reservations open in spring and fill quickly for summer Saturdays. Walk-in tables are scattered along the beach lawn for casual lunches. Charcoal grills are available at the shelters; bring your own fuel.
Beach Hours
The swim beach is open dawn to dusk seasonally. Lifeguard hours are posted at the entrance and on Carver County Parks' website.
Dogs
Dogs are allowed on park trails on a leash. Dogs are NOT allowed on the swim beach itself during the season.
Winter Use
The park doesn't close in winter. Cross-country ski trails are groomed regularly, the boat ramp is plowed for ice fishing access, and the lakeside roads see snowshoers and walkers throughout the season. The view of the frozen lake from the upper trails on a clear winter morning is one of the underrated experiences in the western suburbs.
