The Coney Island of the West, located in Lake Waconia, Minnesota, was once a bustling summer resort that attracted thousands of visitors from the 1880s to the 1920s. Although it continued to operate up until 1960, the island’s heyday was during the earlier years. Spanning 31 acres, the island is situated just half a mile off the shore from the city of Waconia and is a part of Waconia Township.

In 1976, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places for its local significance in the areas of commerce and entertainment/recreation. The island, with its ruins of hotels, cottages, and parks, was nominated for being one of Minnesota’s most popular early resorts, and an early expression of the trend of urban dwellers journeying to Minnesota’s lakes and parks for recreation.

The island’s development was led by Lambert Naegele, Reinhold Zeglin, and Emile Amblard, who built resort buildings and attractions on the island. The best-preserved building from this era, however, is the Emile Amblard Guest House located on the mainland. Visitors to the island can explore its rich history and see remnants of its past as a popular summer getaway.
